I’m Ian McGowan, an artist who paints and draws for publication.  I supply illustrations for books and magazines and images for advertising, wall art, product packaging, greeting cards, stationery and fabrics.  I also create motorsport and aviation art for sale to the public.

My roots are in art and design.  I qualified as a chartered landscape architect during the 1980’s and practised very successfully for a number of years.  During that time, my design work gained 2 Civic Trust Awards and a couple of international competition firsts.  However, my inclination was always towards graphic art, and after a period supplying illustrations for magazines and greeting cards on a part-time basis, I set-up as a full-time freelance commercial artist. That was more than 20 years ago.

Today, I am privileged to see my work published throughout the world in books and magazines, advertisements, product packaging, fabrics and greeting cards – in fact anywhere the painted image is used.  My gallery art can be found in many private collections worldwide.

Bonhams have auctioned my automotive art, and my landscapes regularly feature on the cover of the popular women’s weekly People’s Friend.  The UK current affairs and politics magazine New Statesman publishes my byline portraits of politicians, writers and celebrities every week.

I work collaboratively with some of UK’s best-known greeting card publishers to create great new images that sell. Brits love greeting cards – no wonder the UK greeting card industry is said to be worth over 1.7bn a year!

The US fabric giant Robert Kaufman Inc creates fabrics featuring my work that sell across six continents.

In the theatre world, London-based Password Productions use my illustrations to promote forthcoming events – most recently, Maureen Lipman’s sellout one-woman show at the Edinburgh Festival.

Other clients include: Noel Tatt, Hunkydory Crafts, TK Maxx, Otter House, Nigel Quiney Publications, Riverside Cards, The Countryman, Boundless Magazine, Hjemmet Magazine, Cherry Orchard Publishing, Graham and Brown Wallpaper Designs.
